Uh? Why would you pay $2000+ for 3ds or maya when you can get another Decent 3D- modeling program absolutely free? I'm not saying blender is better but it's at least worth a shot. Top three are definitly 3ds, maya, blender. Oh and don't even try gmax.

By the way, 3dsmax is dying for the last 4 years, and for now it has not a half of Blender's 2.5 power.
It's power consists from third-party plugins, such as V-Ray and others.
