Modx is for developers and people who know how to code, the target end user is not everyday people that's for sure. Drupal is better than Wordpress and Joomla as far as CMS goes but it does things differently making it more difficult to figure out.

MODx is the only CMS listed here that clearly separate code from markup. No php hook in html code - ever! No need to hack the core to add functionality either. Still a young players but it clearly the future of CMSs

Drupal is good for huge website, but learning curve is steeper than all. Wordpress is all cosmetics otherwise it crap, Joomla is probably the easiest and has a friendly back-end. I haven't used ModX but it looks really hot.

I have not used modx. I have played a bit with Joomla, more with Drupal and have developed most on WordPress. 1. Wordpress - it is CRAP! The reason it gets voted in so many comparisons and contests is the fact it is popular. It is popular because most people are morons who want to get stuff done fast, no matter how. Internally WP is crap. Possibly worst developed PHP application I have ever seen. It has a simple admin interface and it is simple to use. But the minute you need to do something unusual with it you bump into lots of problems. It is not impossible to do something, it is just bad code, and becomes a performance hit on top of that. And since I reached the performance topic, here it sucks as well (do not argue with me saying there is WP Super Cache. That doesn't cover situations where you need REAL performance and can't cache). In fewer words, WP is a blogging platform not a CMS. 2. Jooma - not impressed by it. Much better than Wordpress as a CMS. I am not very impressed by its architecture because I find Drupal better. 3. Drupal - difficult to learn. Documentation kinda sucks. Once you get familiar with it however, you realize it is the best CMS of the pack. A mile ahead of Joomla in terms of architecture, 10 miles ahead Wordpress. These days everybody is a fanatic of MVC. Drupal is not MVC-based but I tell you this: it is amazingly well designed for an old framework. Yes, I said framework, because it is not just a CMS. Its code is done so well that you can use it as a framework once you are familiar with it. It is also the only CMS to offer clean SEO-friendly URLs out of the box. As a matter of fact, the other CMS' do it poorly even with plugins. That being said, a CMS is not the perfect solution for every case. Sometimes custom code is best. It is the developer's responsibility to determine the best architecture for a website and choose the best too for the job. Though I find WordPress the worst PHP application ever, I use it on tens of sites that I own. Why? Simple, because it takes me 2 hours to deploy a site with a custom theme on WordPress. If one of them grows big, beyond what I feel confortable using WP for, I can always switch to Drupal.

Lal Phil here. Imo all CMS/frameworks suck. Modx is overrated. Wordpress too. Modx is ok if you don't need modules. Wordpress is ok for just a blog. That's it.

(Bored) They've all got their strengths and weaknesses. If Wordpress code "sucks" then fork it and rework it, let's see if your own effort will be better. Personally, I think the WP Dashboard is superb. If we could combine that sort of intuitive interface with ModX then we'd be laughing.

I would never put ModX in front of my clients. I picked up a client who has a ModX site and I feel bad for them every time they have to have work done on it. They're not capable of doing anything beyond simple text updates...it's too overwhelming. Wordpress is a victim of its own popularity. It's too exploitable, and it's bad for web designers because it makes them easily replaceable by anybody else who uses it. Joomla is really good, but still requires a lot of customization to make it fit most needs.

Regular MODx user, just moving to Revolution now. Have used Joomla, MoveableType, and Drupal. MODx is the ONLY one that provides complete flexibility for customizing websites. It's far and away the best of the bunch, it's not even a contest. It has it's weeknesses to be sure, but they're dwindling in number and the community is top notch, if a bit smaller than the others. Really haven't looked back.

I choose MODx primarily because of how easy it is to learn to do full-custom design integration. There's a learning curve with every CMS and as someone said earlier, MODx definitely has it's limitations... doesn't everything though? After all we're not talking about enterprise systems here that do absolutely everything. Anyway MODx's claim to be as designer-friendly as it is developer friendly is 100% true in my opinion. You wrap the CMS around your design, so to speak—as opposed to figuring out how to "theme" with a particular system. It does have it's own tagging system/language but for someone like myself that's not a PHP whizz, it was not difficult to learn. I've been using MODx for less than a year and feel like an expert in integrating fully custom design. I also know first hand that everything people say about the MODx community is true. Everyone is super friendly and helpful. I realize that there are other great CMSs out there as well but as a designer that needs to work easily along side developers, MODx is what I chose and I'm sure happy I did. I'm also very happy to see it lumped in with "the big three" in this poll.

I hired a designer to make a wordpress site for me a year ago. Making updates, adding tables, finding a file in the 1 media folder, adding sidebars has been brutally hard. Frustrated, I interviewed a joomla designer to redo my site and was considering it because the admin looked easier for my staff and I. Then I stumbled upon a local designer around the block. He showed me how Modx's admin cms works and I was very impressed. Not perfect but its head above shoulders over wp and joomla for cms for novices. Going Modx.

As a web developer for over 20 years experience doing projects for IBM, Office Depot, Royal Caribbean, I have tried all flavors of CMS systems to try and save time, and I have fought many time with Joomla and Wordpress, but my experience with Modx has always been great and everything I need to do, I get done in Modx. I just spent my last 2 weekends pulling my hairs out "trying" so hard to love Joomla as there seems to be so much out there for, but the thing s is just a bloated mess, in most cases to use a new Joomla template, YOU HAVE TO INSTALL a fresh copy of Joomla to get most of the "commercial" templates I have tried and wasted money on, I NEVER had to do anything close with Modx, I wish I didn't even mess with Joomla!!!

I've been using MODx for my company exclusively for over 4 and 1/2 years for the CMS for our clients. From a designer's standpoint, the system is a dream. I can take a PSD file and get a CMS site up in a day quite easily. Honestly I don't have a lot of experience with the other CMS options listed here b/c of their lack of flexibility. It's amazing how you can take straight HTML and plug it into MODx in seconds and create a dynamic setup...it's pretty awesome. MODx is a dream for designers and developers and easy to expand grow. The only "downside" if you will with MODx is that it does not have the plugin repository the size of the other CMS options listed here. But in in a way that has worked well for MODx b/c it has allowed it to grow in new ways without being hung up by a huge repository that depends on the old code. Also worth noting is the MODx community which is extremely helpful. I realize MODx is not the solution for every project, but we've been able to use it to pull off some amazing things, made the clients happy and made our business profitable b/c we've been able to deploy these sites quickly without bugs. I highly recommend any new web developer to learn on this system as it will allow them to grow their business larger and larger over time.

Around 2000, I developed a small CMS for a client using SQL Server and VBScript. Needless to say, it totally sucked monkey balls, but I learned a lot about what NOT to do. Five years ago I was approached by a client to recommend a CMS, before I had any experience with the big boys on the block. After doing a ton of research I was almost sucked in by Drupal or Joomla. Then I stumbled across a very young CMS called MODx. I had found what looked to be a great solution, but the client was stubborn and prideful, and decided to go with a big, foreign commercial system. After banging my head against the wall for several days, in which time I a) couldn't get it installed without errors and b) couldn't make heads or tails of the templating system (templates needed to be compiled, WTF?), I gave up on the client and backed out of the project. A month later, the graphic designer that hired me for the job called me up and said she was fired from the project because the CMS they went with was a complete cluster-f. In the meantime, I installed MODx flawlessly for a client of mine, and had it up and running within a couple days. I can't compare MODx to Joomla or Drupal, but I can compare it to WordPress. WP is for non-developers who want the control taken away from them. MODx gives developers as much control as they'll ever want or need.
