Ok Al, let me set this one straight. This is a perfect example of someone who thinks because he's older, he must be wiser. Seems to me youre more like an old dog who wont learn new tricks. Just because you can name all the Windows OS's that have come out since the early 90's, it doesnt make you an expert computer guy, just someone who can remember 20 years back. If I was Bill Gates, I would surely be laughing (but not scared) right now- youve bought almost every Windows Version he has ever created! Good job making him richer. If you used/liked Windows, Mandriva, OpenSuse and Gentoo, it seems like you like OS's that you can use with only a mouse. Are you scared to type commands in terminal? Well pops, let me break this down to you...I'm not trying to toot my own horn, but here is a small piece of background for my own credibility...Im 30 years old and have been working with computers since before I was 10 (Tandy computers and Commodore 64).I became interested in different OS's when DOS 5.0 came out and I had to learn how to manually change Autoexec.bat and Config.sys files to use a 2400bps modem and a 2xspeed CD ROM with my Sound Blaster sound card. I went from Windows 3.0 to 3.1 to 3.11 all the way to Windows 7 now. Along the way I learned everything I could about them and even received training for MCSE (Microsoft Certified System Engineer) and CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Administrator) Meanwhile I've used almost every Linux OS on distrowatch's website and let me tell you this. Mandriva IS a nice looking OS and it performs well out the box but...for an OS thats been around the longest why are they not that popular? Because they have a crappy philosophy. Make regular users PAY for their software that many other 3rd party developers dont even make programs for. Need a different media player instead of the included one? Good luck making it work properly. Have a Dropbox account to store all your files online? yeah right. Dont even try to get Skype working easily. Whats the point of having a pretty blue desktop if nobody makes applications for it? You said Vista Business Center can never reach Mandriva's Power? What exactly do you mean by that? It sounds like youre reciting their web page...I suppose they have you thinking cause it says "PowerPack," it must be powerful. As far as Linux, I never liked the name "Ubuntu," but right now its #1 for a reason, First off, it's free, secondly, there a thousands of programs in hundreds of repositories for every application you can think of. The support is awesome if youre not afraid to put down the mouse and type. If you like the way Mandriva looks, get Kubuntu, the KDE version is most similar to Mandriva. Or get Ultimate Edition 2.4 which is Ubuntu that uses KDE and Gnome programs along with the most amount of included applications. Now UBUNTU ULTIMATE 2.4 IS THE MOST POWERFUL LINUX DISTRO OUT THE BOX. Sorry to smash your reality, but if you want something that looks like Windows and all you do is use OpenOffice, and a calculator, I guess Mandriva can do the job for you. If you want something that offers stability, security, support, useful programs, and relatively easy to use and a highly configurable desktop environment, then Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic or Ultimate Edition 2.4 Jaunty (x64) are the best...for now. And you can always use VirtualBox to run Windows XP/Vista/Win7 in Ubuntu, or the application "Wine" to run Windows Programs-which comes with Ultimate Edition anyways

OK, another 30-year old geek here. I'm a .net (C#/asp.net) developer, so I spend most of my time on programming on the "windows stack". With that said, I am typing this from Chrome running on Ubuntu 9.10, my HTPC is running Ubuntu 8 something, my NAS/Subversion server is running Ubuntu (don't even remember what version. Last time I touched that box was in 2008). I've tried "a lot" of distros starting with RH 7 many moons ago and so far haven't found anything that I like more than Ubuntu. It works; the support is simply awesome; there are so many apps out that it's almost unhealthy ...

What Andrej said about KDE 4.3 is cool it is amazing to look at, trouble is its so slick and sexy it shows up the seventies look of many applications, also I found on a more practical note it did not perform so well with Wine and it would not run Javelin in the DOS box emulator which is an amazing little interface. The old KDE did this so I suppose there is a sacrifice here like Vista hated Visual Basic 6 which I loved for its exemplary intuitiveness. But I loathed Vista as an operating system. I find Linux far more fun to use than windows but I prefer KDE to Ubuntu. I tried Mandriva and was very impressed with it You used to have to be in the club to get it and its free now but if you want all the games compatibility you've got to pay for the premium version. I use a brilliant integrated software package called Smartware which is ideal for Linux because it was written in Unix, it out performs Open Office and Bill Gates stuff because its far more integrated and dynamic. What Linux needs is a Pied Piper to round up all the lost Orphans which makes clutter crashes.

It's funny cos some of the stuff on 2.1 you can still find on Windows 7!! Notepad, Paint, Clipboard etc.. are all on 2.1.. that's how long MS have dragged this out for.. I'm grudingly on Mandriva's side here. I am responsible by deault for running a linux network but I'm not a sysadmin (meaning I have lots of other things to do), The MCC with Mandriva makes it much easier to manage than other distros meaning I have more time to do my real job. It's the devil I know but it's pretty darn good for our requirements.

Been using Mandrake/Mandriva since it was the McMillan release, based on Red Hat 5. Mandriva does cost money to update unless you update with the free version. This used to break symlinks and lose shell preferences, but the installer is seamless now. I like Mandriva because it's easy to keep up, it's stable, and there's a ton of cutting edge software (Including alpha releases) included with the PowerPack. I've tried Slackware, Debian, SuSE, and Ubuntu, but I keep going back to Mandriva. I use it on my video server (Matroska, finally!)and dual boot my main desktop. I also have a Dell i8600 workhorse with Mandriva 2009 running a 3d desktop with no glitches in KDE. Mandriva rocks.

I personally prefer Mandriva. I've tried Ubuntu 10.04. It is getting better. May be for an absolute beginner, both appeals equal. But for an average user, mandriva has more to offer. Also Mandriva (especially the One Edition) plays multimedia better than ubuntu. You got to spent hours downloading proprietary codecs & other library files to get the same functionality with Ubuntu (otherwise you got to try ubuntu based - Mint, Ultimate Edition, SuperOS etc.). Also Mandriva control center & drak wizards are matchless. Recently ubuntu has also received a mockery of Mandriva control center named UCC, which is far less functional. Also for Ububtu comes with gnome only (otherwise need to download Kubuntu & so on or need to install from web thru repositories). Mandriva (Free Edition DVD) has gnome, KDE, LXDE, XFCE everything included.

Ladies and Gentlemen: Please may we have a little more common decency and less religious flaming? I personally run Win7 for those things for which it is needed, various distros for various features which one does better than another and though I use Ubuntu predominately, I began using Mandriva at version 4 and Red Hat at version 3. I have worn out, killed and otherwise annihilated many computers over the years. I began programming in 1974 on a Burroughs 3600 with 512 kilobytes and things got pretty hairy there for a while. I even had to learn COBOL----the Horror, the Horror!! Then Fortran, Pascal, Algol and other obscure languages. I have NEVER found just one OS, not multics, not Unix, not assembly language, which did everything perfectly. C was an absolute delight compared to the bondage and domination languages like Ada or its parent, Pascal. Spend enough time on the bare metal and the modern OS's look like mana from Heaven. Nothing is perfect, simply a work in progress. Relax, enjoy what you have and flames to dev null.

I have been running Ubuntu for a few years now and I am quite comfortable with it. It has a huge amount packages / repositories that you can call on and is very stable. I can take it off and and put it back on with ease. I decided last week to try Mandriva 2010.2 Gnome. It looks great and operates great. The only 'faults' (if I can call them that) is that it was very limited on software packages thus you are having to download and install yourself which for beginners is a 'nightmare'. Next I felt having 'Movie Player' as a default player a waste of time. It does not come with the codecs and does not work even with the codecs I downloaded. Again for beginners a 'nightmare'. VLC comes with Ubuntu and it is easy to install and comes with everything necessary to play DVD's. If you use wireless you will need to download your own driver. I have found they are usually self executing so for beginners it is a breeze. For ease of use Unbuntu has my vote. it does not look as pretty but what the heck....

Ok TechnoChronic why give a man grief because he is excited about Mandriva?! Bye the way, big deal in editing autoexe.bat and confguig.sys. My 11 year old can do that. I did it all the time and I am not certified in anything. Te be certified in anything Microsoft isn't something to brag about. I've seen certified engineers that couldn't even figure why the monitor wouldn't work. You shouldn't have to be a command line geek to work a computer. I have been using Linux for 7 years now. I hate ms. I am using an ms machine for my business temporarily but will be back with Linux--Mandriva. I have been using Ubuntu but they can't seem to help me find a simple fix for my problem. Comodore 64 was a joke, Tandy was a waste and eve the old Apple was a pain to program. Ms just can't get it together. Windows 7 is a disaster. I used that briefly and went back to Vista. Next time you pat yourself on the back don't lose your arm. You are definitely disrespectful. Just for you info Mandriva is still a well loved distro and is not dead. You need to find a hobby and a real day job.

@Al - If you were a computer person, you wouldn't do what most idiots do, and type With Each Word Capitalized. It makes you look stupid. The same with typing IN ALL CAPS. It reads like you're shouting.. At any rate.. When someone goes on a tirade and leaves a post that is so utterly one-sided, it's easy to just bypass it. A well thought-out reason would have good and bad points about one and/or the other. Ubuntu is great for some things, and Mandriva is great for some things. That is the underlying beauty of Linux: personal choice. I've used countles distros from distrowatch.com just to see what they were like. I've tinkered around in ReactOS, which I hope goes into beta sometime relatively soon. I've given Haiku a go, and that seems to have promise. The point is, your opinion and choice is yours. Free, as in beer; free, as in choice.

Whats up with all the arguement? Linux is Linux. Deciding what distro is the best in the Linux world is like is like saying gravity doesn't exist. If you think Ubuntu is better than Mandriva, or vise versa, that is just your preference. Just remember, Windows breaks and Apples rot. Linux always does exactly what you want it to do.
